I began my adult life working as a primary school teacher, later becoming a mother. As a mother of a young baby I noticed how some mothers had difficulties with their babies, experiencing them as too needy and demanding and wondered if these mothers were depressed. I wanted to help them and with this aim trained as a National Childbirth Trust counsellor.
Once my children became older I took my interest in relational difficulties into my psychotherapy MA research. I looked in depth into how our early experiences of difficult relationships continue unconsciously to affect us in adulthood. Our history becomes the lens through which we view ourselves and our relationships.
During my psychotherapy training I worked as a counsellor for the charity Barnados, working with disturbed children’s parents. As an NCT Counsellor I had worked with new mothers, fathers and family members of all ages. These experiences have given me a broad experience and interest in the difficulties we may face at particular times in our lives.
